Information on Funding and Rebates

Medicare:

Medicare Australia provides rebates for eligible clients who can claim money back for a number of their speech pathology sessions. The Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan provides Medicare rebates to allied health services for people with a chronic medical condition, who require support from at least two specialist health care professionals. A chronic medical condition is one that has been present, or will be present, for at least six months. These rebates are per client, not per service, so you may access many allied health services but you will still only receive 5 rebates per calendar year.

Please contact your General Practitioner to discuss whether your child may be eligible for these rebates. This appointment may need specific paperwork to be completed so please inform the doctor’s receptionist when you are making an appointment.

Medicare can also be contacted if you require any further information on their General Inquiries number 132 011. The Speech Pathology Australia website also has more information.

If you have a Medicare referral from your GP or Pediatrician, please send it to me before your child’s first session. This will help with receipt information.

I am a registered Speech Pathologist with Medicare and have a Medicare Provider Number which is used to make Medicare claims.

Private Health Insurance Claims:

If you are planning to claim your speech pathology sessions through your private health insurance, please contact your private health fund to check whether your specific level of cover entitles you to a rebate that covers some or all of the speech pathology sessions.

Messages Speech and Language Therapy Services does not have HICAPS facilities, however the receipts issued include all the information, codes and details required to make a claim with your health fund.

Your health fund may let you make claims online or through an app on your smartphone.

Please note that private health insurance does not pay for the gap between the amount Medicare refunds and the cost of the therapy session. You can choose to use Medicare to claim a rebate initially then when you have claimed your maximum number of sessions, you can then claim the other sessions through your private health fund.

Private health funds may pay more for any initial appointment (once per year).
